Abstract:
This case examines the strategic crossroads at which Global Barrel Logistics (GBL), a Mumbai-based mid-sized global oil logistics firm, found itself following severe supply chain disruptions triggered by the Russia–Ukraine conflict in 2022. Historically dependent on Russian crude supplies and long-term fixed shipping contracts, GBL’s efficiency-driven logistics model was significantly destabilized by sanctions, rerouted trade flows, oil price volatility, rising freight costs, and geopolitical uncertainty. The crisis exposed structural vulnerabilities in GBL’s supply network. In 2022, the company experienced a 15% revenue decline and an 84% drop in net profit. Although tactical measures such as supplier diversification and shipment rerouting supported financial recovery in 2023–2024, deeper strategic questions remain unresolved. The leadership team was divided. While the CEO Arjun Patel advocated bold transformation through diversification, digitalization, regional logistics hubs, and renewable energy expansion. COO Rajesh Mehta preferred incremental adaptation to protect operational stability and safeguard financial recovery. The case provides an opportunity to examine supply chain resilience in geopolitically volatile markets, assess financial performance under disruption, and evaluate whether GBL should pursue incremental adjustment or structural reinvention.
